My name is Andrea and I was an AFEPA student from 2010-2012 so I´m the first generation graduate. I was born in Slovakia. After Bachelor studies at the Slovak University of Agriculture (Nitra, Slovakia), I decided to apply for AFEPA. My destinations were Uppsala and Budapest. ¿What's the best? Firstly, the friendship and cultural sharing. I met some great people during those two years and they made my life special. In fact, they also changed me. Everything passed so quickly and now (six months after everything is over) my mind is pulsing with a strange feeling of nostalgia. Secondly, the professional background. I found out in which direction I want to lead my life and what I want to do. I got a real passion for rural development issues, specially related to the Central European region from where I come from and where I was born. Thirdly, the independence and personal development. I’ve learnt to COOK! I’ve learnt to manage my monthly budget and I’ve learnt to take care of myself hundreds/thousands kilometers away from home.

I am originally from Orléans Canada – a suburb of the Nation’s Capital: Ottawa. I have two major career goals for my life: (1) to become a university professor/researcher and (2) to become the superintendent of one of Canada’s beautiful National Parks. I started my student career at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario. I spent three years in Lindsay graduating as an Ecosystem Management Technician and as a Parks and Forest Recreation Management Technician. Following this, I spent a fourth year in Fleming at their Haliburton, Ontario campus and got a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Adventure Tourism Management. Knowing full-well that this would not be it for me as a student I then applied to the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. During my studies at Lakehead University I took some Finnish language courses and decided that I should put them to good use by going on exchange there.
I came to the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in European Forestry to build on the relationships which I had started during an exchange visit as a Bachelor student in 2006. Ever since my first visit to Joensuu I had been searching for an opportunity to return and pursue graduate level studies and the timing was somehow perfect for me. I was particularly interested in the variety of courses which were offered from all of the partner universities and the fact that the program awarded a double degree. The double degree in particular will provide me with an edge over other job applicants once I am back in Canada and searching for PhD positions.
I have worked several jobs in the past from paper boy to liaison officer, to forest firefighter. The latter of those jobs is the one which has steered me towards an academic career. Mother Nature is a formidable force to be reasoned with and wildfire is one of the ways in which she manifests her power over us. Many aspects of forest disturbances interest me, not only the suppression of wildfire, but what effects decades of suppression have had on our forests. In the course of the MScEF I have been able to connect with several people who will be able to help me further develop my career in fire ecology and management.
Although I am leaving Europe this spring, I know that I will be back and I know that the relationships which I have developed within the MScEF program has opened doors for me around the world and will help me further my career and enjoy my private life.

When I have been accepted to start the AMASE-master in Barcelona, I thought in the opportunity to travel in Europe, to meet people of different cultures and to learn other languages. But, even if it is happened, even if my entire Erasmus Mundus story is culturally rich, I have never thought in the friendship that I would enjoy and that is my best milestone from AMASE. This experience has encouraged me to always search a synergy with others, not only professionally but personally also.
Today, I am living in Nancy, France; doing my PhD in solid-mechanics at the University of Strasbourg and; working on a project with the Public Research Centre Henri Tudor in Luxembourg. In this way, I keep the European way-of-life developed during the AMASE experience, working on materials science. In my professional experience the scientific skills learnt during the AMASE-master are kindly important on my actual work.
Finally, the values developed in my Erasmus-Mundus activity have shown to me the importance of partnership, perseverance and passion for science. These values with a bit of discipline are, for me, the main needs to do a successful high-quality master in Europe as AMASE.

Studying the CoMEM programme has opened many doors for me. Internationally I was able to present my MSc thesis work at two conferences in 2012 (the year after I graduated); at PIANC-COPEDEC in Chennai, India and at ICCE in Santander, Spain. Locally I also feel much better equipped for my job at an engineering consultancy. The rigorous theoretical focus of TU Delft in the field of coastal engineering has given me a larger appreciation of research and also highlighted the importance of continuous learning especially when working in consulting. I can highly recommend the Erasmus Mundus programmes to any prospective students. It is likely to broaden your perspective of the world, show you much of Europe and challenge you academically.

I am an islander from Jamaica. I am quite interested in sustainability, not only on an environmental point of view but also in terms of the business aspects such economic, social and environmental impacts involved in establishing companies. Aside from this I enjoy the dynamic experience of meeting different people and travelling which SELECT has definitely given me the opportunity to do. For the most part my expectations were met; however, there were some courses which were a bit basic and quite general. Additionally, I would have preferred if there were more courses that we could have done with other students who were studying similar courses instead of having a few of the tailored courses at KTH.
