The Broad Discipline of Applied Sciences aims to facilitate students’ active exploration of different applied sciences disciplines in their first year of study. This allows students the flexibility to finalise their programme choice based on their interest at the end of Year One as follows:

BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology;
BSc(Hons) in Chemical Technology;
BSc(Hons) in Engineering Physics;
BSc(Hons) in Food Safety and Technology; and
BSc(Hons) in Investment Science.

After successful completion of the 4-year programme, students will be awarded a degree in their selected Major programme. For the specific aims of the above applied sciences programmes, please refer to their respective programme entries.

The characteristics of this programme are as follows:

- Students are provided with a wide spectrum of choices in the disciplines of Applied Sciences;

- This programme is an undeclared track that offers students a year to identify their area of interest and career aspirations, which will facilitate their Major programme selection; and
Students are guaranteed admission to their selected Major programme.

In the common Year One curriculum, students are required to take the following subjects:

  • Basic Mathematics – An Introduction to Algebra and Differential Calculus *
  • Basic Statistics
  • Calculus and Linear Algebra
  • Chinese Language
  • English Language
  • Freshman Seminar – Science to Improve Quality of Life
  • Healthy Lifestyle
  • Introduction to Chemistry OR General Chemistry I *
  • Introduction to Physics OR University Physics I *
  • Introductory Life Science OR General Biology *
  • Leadership and Intra-Personal Development


* The subjects to be taken depend on the students' HKDSE attainment.


In addition to the above subjects, students can also take some subjects from the Discipline Specific Requirements to prepare for further study in the selected Major programme, or some subjects from the General University Requirements in Year One.


Students would follow the curriculum of their selected Major programme from Year Two onwards.
